Kinja'd!!!

So, as you know every friday my brain seems to set in a bad ideas mode. And here's this week bad ideas, a 1995 Mercedes-Benz SL500.

Kinja'd!!!

My local mercedes dealer has one of this ups for grabs, and they're asking 8.5k for it. It has 77k miles on the clock, manually-fitted hard top, 5L V8, ancient 4-speed hydraulic transmission, and i think a bit worn out interior. And because i think i won't be able to keep another Mercedes at home, i might sell the CLS.

In Indonesia, a well-maintained CLS500 (or 550 for you in the states), is worth 70-75k USD. i think i'll sell mine at 68.5k, and use the money to rebuild the car with modern components. You know, like putting the 6.3L V8 from the SL63 just like one of these. Bad ideas?

It's a good idea, with some risk though. I think the CLS is a sharp ride, and would be a pretty great DD but then again I've never driven one haha. If I were to buy an old Benz and make it modern I'd do it to an old Big sedan. That would be awesome haha

Well, you have a gazillion thing that would be wrong.

CLS is by far the best mercedes i've ever driven. Period.

The SL is a great car, but the upkeep as a DD will be far too much. The R129 class is incredible, but when something breaks, will it be worth fixing?

I would only consider it if the SL was 1998 or newer. That rules out most biodegradeable wiring harnesses, and gives you an easy to fix hydraulic soft top. If youve ever had to fix one yourself (with non-MB parts), youll know what Im referring to.

That looks like an V12 in the red benz, too much fun to sell IMHO.

I'd love to drive/own one in the future. I prefer the first generation to the second, looks wise.

I'm with JGrabowMSt, having once owned that 95 SL, you're much better off with a newer model. That year had lots of issues and the dealers had no clue how to fix most of them. I also loved my CLK, but it had a different set of issues - luckily it was a long-term rental in Italy and when stuff broke I just went and got another one.
